LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK
On the floor of the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland, lies the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park. This impressive park offers a wide ecological diversity, varying habitats, and picturesque landscapes that include Lake Nakuru itself, the surrounding escarpment, and picturesque ridges. It’s an ideal destination for birdwatching, hiking, picnic game drives, and boat riding.
One of the most breathtaking sights within Lake Nakuru National Park is the massive flock of flamingos that fringe the shores of the soda lake. With thousands of these elegant birds creating a pulsing pink swathe of life, their presence is truly a remarkable spectacle. As you explore further, you’ll discover that the park is also a sanctuary for rhinoceros. Both black and white rhinos can be spotted here, often seen resting under the shade of acacia trees along the lake shore.
The park abounds with a diverse range of game species. You can expect to encounter huge herds of waterbuck, zebra, buffalo, and even the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Furthermore, Lake Nakuru National Park offers one of the best opportunities for leopard sightings in Kenya, and it is home to several large prides of lions.
Despite its relatively compact size of 188 square kilometers (162 square miles), Lake Nakuru National Park offers excellent accessibility and easy game viewing. The interior roads are well-maintained and easy to navigate, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable wildlife viewing experience.
Lake Nakuru is situated 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Nairobi, making it easily accessible for day trips or longer stays in the area. The park’s higher elevation, standing at 1,756 meters (5,757 feet), provides a cool and comfortable climate, even though it is located near the equator. The park generally experiences a pleasant climate, with intermittent late afternoon showers that are invigorating rather than disruptive.
The park is open for visitors throughout the year. Unlike some other parks, Lake Nakuru National Park remains accessible during the wet season, thanks to its well-maintained roads and the park’s fencing, which prevents animals from dispersing. However, the dry season from July to December is the most
