Description
A safari through the Ol Pejeta Conservancy provides an incredible opportunity to witness the remarkable wildlife and conservation efforts. One highlight is the chance to observe rescued chimpanzees, hearing their stories of resilience after enduring captivity in West and Central Africa. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the exclusive destination in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees, and you even have the option to adopt one of these amazing creatures!
During a game drive, visitors can explore the largest black rhino sanctuary and gain insights into the conservation initiatives carried out to protect these endangered species. Following an extensive translocation process in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Services and neighboring Lewa Conservancy, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is now home to 88 black rhinos.
In addition to black rhinos, the conservancy houses a founder population of southern white rhinos, alongside the only remaining two northern white rhinos residing in a separate sanctuary.
A visit to Ol Pejeta Conservancy offers a chance to experience and appreciate Kenya’s breathtaking wilderness, guided by knowledgeable professionals. Just a three-hour drive from Nairobi, this conservancy is home to all members of the “Big Five” wildlife and boasts one of the highest densities of big cats, including lions, with a total of 72 individuals spread across six prides.
Furthermore, Ol Pejeta Conservancy offers a habitat for approximately 30 cheetahs, 20 elusive leopards, and even packs of African wild dogs, making it one of the rare parks where these species can be spotted. The conservancy is committed to safeguarding other endangered species such as oryx, hartebeest, Grevy’s zebra, and the bat-eared fox. Abundant displays of giraffes, monkeys, baboons, hippos, impalas, gazelles, zebras, jackals, hyenas, and diverse birdlife add to the rich biodiversity found within the conservancy.
Spanning 360 square kilometers (139 square miles) and situated 207 kilometers (128 miles) from Nairobi, Ol Pejeta Conservancy utilizes innovative game corridors to facilitate the free movement of wildlife while protecting vulnerable rhinos. These special corridors feature knee-high posts that allow most animals to pass through effortlessly, while serving as a deterrent for rhinos, preventing them from entering areas where they may fall victim to poaching for their valuable horns.
The conservancy comprises five distinct habitats, including grasslands, open bush, dense bush, riverine areas, and swamps. These varied landscapes create a diverse and thriving environment for the remarkable wildlife species within the conservancy.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy offers nine accommodation options, ranging from riverside camping to luxurious lodges. Some tented camps are strategically positioned near watering holes, ensuring abundant opportunities for day and nighttime wildlife viewing.
Located between the foothills of the Aberdares and the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya in central Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy benefits from a steady equatorial climate, with relatively stable daytime temperatures around 24°C (75°F).
The best time to visit is during the dry months of June to September and December to February when wildlife is more easily sighted. However, the conservancy exhibits a lush and vibrant atmosphere during the wet season from October to May.
Operating hours at Ol Pejeta Conservancy are from 07:00 to 21:00 daily, providing ample time to explore and appreciate the wonders of this exceptional conservation area.
